Transgender Awareness Week
You’ve heard of Simon Hirst, right; former DJ for Capital FM and presenter of Hirsty’s Daily Dose? Well, the recent announcement that she
was halfway through gender reassignment treatment came as a huge shock to his vast array of fandom. However, in her own words, she was “overwhelmed” by the support.

For someone in the public eye to announce this change to the world sends out an incredibly good message to others that may be struggling to come to terms with their ‘difference’. However, despite the open-mindedness of the majority, there is still a great deal of discrimination towards gender nonconforming people today. So, here at UberKinky, we thought we’d take this opportunity to show our support.
You could be forgiven for not knowing that this November marks annual Transgender Awareness Week. That’s because, up until now, it has predominantly only been recognised in America. However, as with all of the most significant things to come out of the States, it will make it here eventually. So, we’ve decided to fly the flag for Britain this year, in order to raise awareness of trans issues and put a stop to prejudice. Never has it been more evident that bigotry still exists today, than with the revelation that Global Radio “did not think gender reassignment was suitable or commercially viable content” for shows, leading to Hirst’s sudden departure from our airwaves in June.
November 14 – November 20 marks Transgender Awareness Week 2014. Intended to raise the visibility of the gender nonconforming community and address the issues faced, it culminates with the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), to commemorate all of those that lost their lives over the past year as a result of transphobia. The purpose of the week is not only to educate people and offer support to the community, but also to celebrate the diversity, identity and experiences of the community.
For those of you that don’t know, transgender is an umbrella term that encompasses all of those that have swapped gender from male-to-female (MTF) or female-to-male (FTM), and many others whose gender identity or expression differs from societal ‘norms’ and expectations of how they should look, act or identify based on the sex they were assigned at birth. Fear and hatred means that these people are often the targets of discrimination and harassment, which can have a negative impact on physical and emotional wellbeing.
More and more, we are seeing transgender folk in the media and on our television screens. If you’ve ever watched Orange Is the New Black, you probably recognise the name, Laverne Cox. Laverne uses her platform of fame to continually educate the public about the complex and robust lives and identities of transgender people.
In honour of this special week and as a token of our support, we are running a promotion for 10% off our entire collection of packers
So why not look and feel hot, by packing heat with UberKinky?
